Understanding the Causes of Gum Disease and Recognizing its Symptoms

Gum disease is a serious oral health problem that can significantly impact the strength and health of the teeth and gums. Fortunately, gum disease is a progressive condition, so, as long as patients understand the causes of gum disease and recognize its symptoms, the problem should be detected in its earliest stages, when it’s the easiest to treat. At DeJesus Dental Group, our dentists offer a range of general dentistry services that help to preserve the health of the teeth and gums, but we also offer the knowledge and information that patients need to understand to care for their oral health and to recognize when a problem has developed. This includes teaching patients about gum disease symptoms and causes, and also offering our Bridgeport, CT patients effective treatment options should gum disease develop.

Causes of Gum Disease

The causes of gum disease are very similar to those of tooth decay and a root canal infection. Essentially, gum disease occurs when bacteria, plaque, and tartar are able to build up on the teeth. As this buildup occurs, it is not just the visible surface of the tooth that becomes affected, but also the area of the tooth that is covered by the gums. This, in turn, introduces those same harmful bacteria to the gums, and they are likely to become infected. Although the primary cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene habits or improper oral hygiene techniques, there are other factors that can increase the risk of gum disease. These include the following:

  • Smoking or the use of chewing tobacco
  • Certain general health problems, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer
  • Hormonal changes, such as those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause
  • Stress
  • Poor nutrition
  • Misaligned teeth that are more difficult to clean

Symptoms of Gum Disease

Gum disease does not always immediately result in visible symptoms, but over time, most patients will experience at least some of the following gum disease symptoms:

  • Tender gums that bleed easily (especially during brushing or flossing)
  • Swollen gums
  • Gums that are dark red in color
  • A persistent case of bad breath
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

In many cases, once patients are experiencing gum disease symptoms, the condition is already beginning to advance in severity, so it is important to report these symptoms to a dentist as soon as possible so that an exam can be scheduled.

Gum Disease Treatment

Although gum disease poses a serious threat to the health of the teeth and gums, the good news is that it can be effectively treated. Our dentists offer several periodontal treatments that can rid the teeth and gums of harmful bacteria, plaque, and tartar, and encourage the healing and growth of healthy gum tissue. We will be happy to discuss these treatment options with patients who are suffering from the various stages of gum disease.
