When is a Dental Crown needed?

Dental crowns are an ideal treatment method for a number of oral issues, including:

  • Protect teeth that have weakened over time
  • Restores use of broken teeth
  • Cautionary measure against cracked teeth

A crown is a great restorative option for teeth. Crowns are formed from high-grade porcelain and designed to allow the full range of use that comes with natural teeth.

How A Dental Crown Is Made

Fitting for a dental crown takes two different appointments. The first session allows our staff to remove any decay, shape the tooth, and place a temporary crown on the tooth until the permanent crown is custom made by the dental laboratory.

During the second visit, the temporary crown is switched for the permanent one and is sealed into place, leaving you with a natural-looking and feeling tooth.

Differences Between A Dental Bridge And A Crown

Unlike a crown, a dental bridge attaches artificial teeth to your adjacent natural teeth.  Bridges can be designed as a permanent solution, called a fixed bridge, or as a removable solution. Both fixed and removable bridges provide by removing any gaps between teeth.

Fixed bridges are put into place by bonding the artificial teeth to your adjacent natural teeth. Depending on the condition of your natural teeth, a crown may be placed over the tooth to better support the artificial teeth.

Removable bridges attach to your natural teeth with metal clasps. They can be taken in and out as needed. Many patients prefer this option for personal reasons.

Material Used For Dental Crowns and Bridges

Dental crowns and bridges are constructed from several different materials. The goal is to provide you with a lasting, natural-looking solution. We use one of three materials to create crown and bridges:

  • Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) uses metal (sometimes gold) covered by a tooth-colored porcelain. It is incredibly strong and great for teeth that are damaged and need a tough protective covering. This process requires removing a small portion of enamel to fit naturally.

  • eMax is a special type of ceramic that will create a strong, attractive smile. It’s less likely to be chipped than Zirconia.

  • Zirconia crowns are a type of ceramic. They are translucent, just like real enamel, and are very strong. In some cases, Zirconia could hurt natural teeth, so our team takes every precaution to choose the correct crown or bridge material for each patient.

Regardless of what material is used, the dentists at DeJesus Dental Group are prepared to discuss what options are available to you. Use our convenient online form to contact either DeJesus Dental Group office.

Let's keep your oral health a priority.
